Host and port layout
Record switch and NIC models, software releases, supported port rates and breakout configurations at both ends. A matching form factor alone is not a compatibility decision.
Network application
A capacity upgrade starts with the links that need to change. Separate server-to-switch connections, spine–leaf links and connections between equipment rooms before selecting optics. Keep the existing links and the target architecture in the same port schedule so that migration and spare requirements remain visible.

Record switch and NIC models, software releases, supported port rates and breakout configurations at both ends. A matching form factor alone is not a compatibility decision.
Record measured link length, fibre type, connector and patch-panel path. Compare a transceiver-and-fibre assembly with DAC or AOC where the rack layout allows either approach.
Identify links that stay at 100G, links moving to 400G or 800G, and the temporary connections needed during changeover. Include replacement units and maintenance windows in the bill of materials.
Select the exact model after checking the host, cable path and operating requirements.
Review existing aggregation links and the retained spare pool.
